MIKROTIK & ROUTER OS

Router OS Level License

During the Cold War, when tension between the United States and the Soviet Union had not yet eased, Soviet communications and networking avoided U.S. technology dominance. The Soviets built their own networking software — RouterOS — evolved from Linux 2.4. Today RouterOS no longer resembles Linux (just as Cisco IOS grew from an undisclosed OS). After the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, its territories split into many countries; one of them is Latvia, now an independent state. From there the software spread worldwide. RouterOS has a structured learning path comparable to leading platforms such as Cisco (see details here). Cisco certification has six levels; RouterOS certification also has six. ROS also includes features Cisco does not, such as HotSpot and EoIP. RouterOS is widely recognized as excellent, affordable networking software used as the core of many Chinese and Taiwanese hardware platforms. In our experience, an install image of only about 16 MB supporting up to 2 GB RAM can handle more than 1,000 clients, at a software cost of roughly 7,000–8,000 THB. That low barrier lets anyone with commitment build without the endless hardware replacements other gear often requires. The software has been used by organizations including NASA and the U.S. Department of State (see details here). Corecasys Enterprise Series uses RouterOS as the firewall core for these reasons — under a Thai brand that competes with global vendors on performance at a fair price.
